Reflections on Our Short Story Project

Reflection about the group writing process

by Juan, Fareeha, Jumanah, Nina, and Haoran

The initiative for writing a story came from our Reading and Writing class with Victoria Bolton. We started one month ago doing the brainstorm and the outline in order to build a compact academic project. It is very hard to write a story between five people, because we come from different countries and cultures and everyone thinks in a different way. The good points of agreeing were focused in our youth spirit which is common for each one. Then we agreed on writing a story about a girl who was a brilliant and athletic swimmer until she had accident for which she lost her ability to swim. It was followed by a terrible depression, but her desire to go forward and help people changed her life and she found again a reason to live.
We came through a lot of challenges, to join every single part including everyone’s creativity; we are learning English as a second language, so our grammar and writing will improve more in the future, though we believe that it is understandable now. We feel really proud to see our progress learning English, also it has been a helpful tool to learn about the rules of writing which are very important when the authors want to maintain their readers’ attention on their books.
Finally we want to encourage our classmates and all the members from ALI program at Nazareth College to read our story, it can motivate us to go always beyond our fears and overcome the obstacles. Furthermore, our classes in the future will ask us to write academic papers which need a good development and coherence, so it could be an appropriate exercise to improve our English skills.
